Learn more about MCT’s Roof Replacement and Solar Installation Project.
The Missoula Children’s Theatre is currently pursuing a project to replace our leaking roof and install solar panels. Through a partnership with Missoula County and the Montana Department of Commerce, MCT secured a $483,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for this project in April 2025. MCT, Missoula County, and Commerce worked diligently to follow the procurement process and secure an architect for the project. OZ Architects was selected and worked with electrical and solar partners to create project designs.
After much anticipation, the construction bids were finally received in March 2026. However, due to increased material and labor costs, the lowest qualified bid was significantly higher than the secured CDBG funds. Now, MCT is working to secure additional funding to make this vital $800,000 project a reality.
The roof, spanning both the 1935 and 1998 portions of our facility, is nearly 30 years old. During periods of heavy rain or snow melt, the roof consistently leaks into several portions of the building – including the lobby and the stage.
Replacing the roof is critical to the safety of our staff and patrons alike, and is necessary to ensure we can continue to operate all of our Youth and Community Series programming and our international Red Truck Tour from this facility.
A new roof will also allow MCT to install solar panels. MCT spends between $3,000 – $4,500 per month on electrical bills. Installing solar panels at the time of roof replacement will reduce those overhead costs for energy, and will allow us to reinvest those savings into our people and our mission.
