I have always been in the performing arts. From skits and original “plays” in our side yard when I was five, to top choirs in high school and college, I grew up performing. But it wasn’t until community theater after college that I really began to find myself. The theater community is so accepting, supportive, and encouraging, it allows a person to feel safe exploring feelings, taking risks, and being vulnerable.
As my kids got old enough for theater, it became a family affair. I joined the local children’s theater board and was president for a number of years. During that time, I watched how theater transformed shy, self-doubting, misfit children into confident, proud teens. A theater full of misfits is a group of artists given a place to fit in. Supporting youth and community arts is important to me because youth and community arts gave so much to me. I give back now that I am able so that others may find that same community, support, and opportunity to find themselves. So whether I’m on stage, behind the sound board, moving sets or donating money, I will stay involved.
Theater and music keep me sane. Grounded. I hope the arts do the same for you.
