In 2012, the MCT International Tour will travel to 23 Montana towns within Flathead, Lincoln, Lake, Mineral, Powell, Ravalli, and Sanders counties. During each tour week, two MCT tour actor/directors will arrive on a Sunday, complete with sets, props, costumes, make-up, and scripts. Local students from each community will audition on Monday, rehearse throughout the week and perform in a musical on Saturday.

“While children enjoy their week with the Missoula Children’s Theatre, they’re also developing critical life skills such as teamwork, communication and social skills, and self-discipline,” said MCT executive director, Michael McGill, “Our mission is the development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts,” he continued.

Each show title MCT offers is based upon a fairy tale which resonates with audiences of all ages. “To keep the touring repertoire fresh, we add a new original show each year,” says Naomi Lichtenberg, MCT foundation relations director. “This year the new show is ‘The Secret Garden,’ written by Michael McGill.”

In addition to the performance, each town also receives three workshops with instruction on theatre-related topics or social issues such as Creative Dramatics, If Forests Could Talk (a collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service), or Theatre Games.

“Our program increases access to the arts for children between ages 5-18 in underserved, rural communities,” Lichtenberg adds. “The performances reinforce the values and goals of local schools by teaching children that hard work, discipline, and listening skills lead to success.”

Once Upon A Mattress is a Broadway musical version of The Princess and the Pea and, according to Joseph Martinez, artistic director at MCT, the performance will be slightly modified to make the production more suitable for the audience. “Lowering the light and sound levels for those who are sensitive will be the biggest difference change to this performance. With the help and understanding of VSA Montana, other additions will be made as well. The lobby will have designated quiet areas and will be staffed with autism experts and trained volunteers. Inside the theater, volunteers will hold up glow sticks to warn parents and caretakers when there might be applause or other loud changes, allowing them to help assist in knowing when to cover their ears or put on their headphones. The start time for this production was moved up to 6:30 p.m. in order to help accommodate normal evening routines.”

Alayne Dolson, executive director of VSA Montana shares, “Our goal is to make theatre accessible to those community members who may find it extremely difficult—if not impossible—to attend any live performance. We are very excited for VSA and MCT to work together, providing a safe environment for the whole family where they can enjoy this funny and entertaining show together.”

To help apprehensive theatre-goers who might not know what to expect, MCT developed a Social Story for children which explains step-by-step what each person may experience during the night of this performance. Martinez added, "While the evening will be full of surprises, MCT wants to make everyone as comfortable as possible and will try to accommodate the needs of each audience member and make them feel welcome."
Tickets for this performance are on sale by phone at the MCT Box Office (406) 728-7529. Tickets are $10 per person and all seats are reserved.

Directed by Teresa Waldorf (University of Montana’s School of Theatre and Dance), with music direction by Gregory Boris (MCT), and choreography by Lisa Deer (On Center Dance), this family-friendly, musical comedy is based upon Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea”—only this version is chock-full of wonderfully wacky characters performed by talented Missoula actors.

The story begins in a small, medieval kingdom where Prince Dauntless (Alex Saint) must find a wife. He has had twelve prospects thus far, but none that his mother, Queen Aggravain (Angela Billadeau), approve of. The ladies and lords of the court are personally invested in finding the prince a wife, and hopeful that the Queen will approve of the “lucky thirteenth” contender. The score by composer and writer Mary Rodgers (“Free to Be . . . You And Me,” “Freaky Friday”) and lyricist Marshall Barer (“Here I Come to Save The Day,” theme of “Mighty Mouse”) adds depth to the show through beguiling songs about royal courtship.

“Once Upon A Mattress” performances will be January 20-29 at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts with an adapted performance for those living on the autism spectrum held on January 24. Ticket prices range from $10 to $21, are available by phone at (406) 728-7529, online, or in person at 200 North Adams Street, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on performance dates one hour prior to show times.

Missoula, MT – Missoula Community Theatre (MCT) brings the heart-warming, romantic musical comedy “She Loves Me” to the stage beginning in December.

A musical adaptation of a play by Hungarian playwright Miklos Laszlo, “She Loves Me” revolves around a young man and woman who are at odds with each other at work, but who are simultaneously falling in love as secret pen pals.

Missoula Community Theatre first produced “She Loves Me” in 1994 at the Front Street Theatre with a cast that included Michael McGill (now MCT’s executive director), as well as local actors Alicia Bullock-Muth, Shaun Nichols, and as sixteen-year-old Andy Meyers.

Meyers has performed and directed professionally in theatres across the country and was recently named the new artistic director of the Fort Peck Summer Theatre. And he is once again part of “She Loves Me,” but in a completely different role. “Last time I played Arpad, the delivery boy. That production had an incredible cast of Missoula theatre favorites, all of whom I looked up too,” Meyers said. “’She Loves Me’ has always been one of my favorite musicals, and it is such an incredible experience to be able to play Georg here in Missoula.” Meyers continued, “At the risk of sounding totally cliché, that show was the turning point in my life as an artist; it was during that production that I realized that theatre would be my career, not just my hobby. I feel very blessed to have grown up in Missoula, participating in MCT programs, so I can’t imagine a better place to perform my dream role.”

Directed by Joseph Martinez, “She Loves Me” performances will be December 2-11 at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts. Ticket prices range from $17 to $21, are available by phone at (406) 728-7529, online at www.mctinc.org, or in person at 200 North Adams Street, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on performance dates one hour prior to show time.

(Missoula, MT) MCT, Inc.—the legal name of the non-profit organization that includes a number of programs, both locally and far-reaching—is making a small change to its community theatre name to better reflect its purpose and scope. What was formerly known as the MCT Community Theatre is now called the Missoula Community Theatre.

“The program itself is not changing,” stated Terri Elander, public relations director. “We still offer a season subscription or single-ticket sales for five, high-quality productions each year. We are just simplifying the name. We know that many people have been calling this program the Missoula Community Theatre for years anyway, so, in reality, it’s a very minor change.

The new name will help to clarify the differences between various programs and projects that live under the MCT umbrella. “MCT has always been synonymous with the Missoula Children’s Theatre,” Elander continued, “but now the acronym will clearly reference the programs that involve thousands of Missoula-area participants each year. Whether on stage as actors, singers or dancers, below the stage in the orchestra pit, backstage on the technical crew, in front of house or serving as ushers, this all works because there are local volunteers, working and playing together—building community. It’s not just any community theatre; it’s the Missoula Community Theatre.”

Missoula Community Theatre Just in Time for Halloween

Missoula, MT – Missoula Community Theatre opens their season on October 21 with “Dracula.” “It’s a great show for Missoula,” says director TJ Charlson, “There’s such a wide range of talents onstage. We have everyone from Hollywood actors to people who have never been onstage before. It’s a true cross-section of Missoula performers.”

The story begins as young Lucy Seward (Andrea Asta) is strangely listless ever since the arrival of her unusual neighbor Count Dracula (Howard Kingston). Dr. Seward's sanitorium patients have been agitated as well, and even the well-known specialist Dr. Van Helsing (Alan Gelman) cannot explain what has happened.

Based on the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker and adapted to the stage by Hamilton Deane in 1924, this well-known vampire story is set in Victorian-era England. The novel has been a major influence on the popularity of vampires since its release, leading to countless film and stage adaptations of the story. “This show is different because it challenges peoples’ expectations of what they think vampires are. This isn’t ‘True Blood’ or ‘Twilight,’ it’s the original story that put vampires into the public mind,” said Charlson.

Guaranteed to bring shivers to the audience, “Dracula” performances are October 21-30 at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts. Ticket prices range from $17 to $21, are available by phone at (406) 728-7529, online at www.mctinc.org, or in person at 200 North Adams Street, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on performance dates one hour prior to show time.

Missoula, MT – In conjunction with National Arts In Education Week, MCT, Inc. will present the children’s play “Miss Nelson is Missing” at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 18 at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.

Based upon the popular children’s book by Harry Allard and James Marshall, “Miss Nelson is Missing” tells the story of an elementary school teacher who can’t control her crazy classroom because she is just too nice. When she disappears, her replacement is the hard-as-nails, detention-loving, recess-canceling, homework overloading substitute teacher Viola Swamp. The kids suddenly realize how much they want Miss Nelson back, and they’ll do anything to solve the mystery of her disappearance.

“We wanted to do something during Arts In Education Week this year,” commented Joseph Martinez, artistic director. “So many children are familiar with this book, and we thought it would be a great opportunity to bring the story to life on stage. We hope that by presenting this production that it not only increases children’s appreciation for reading, but also creates an appreciation for live theatre.”

“Many familiar faces from the MCT staff are participating in this production, including Don Mogstad and Eric Prim, who are responsible for local children’s programs,” Martinez continued. “The fact that so many children work with Don and Eric during the summer and the school year, I think it would be great if those kids got to see their teachers as actors.” Other staff members in the cast include Amy Ellis, Chelle Robinson, Don Collins, Dylan Wright, Kepler Correia, Kevin Harrington, Michelle Nigh-Mogstad, and Victoria Larson.

Tickets for Miss Nelson is Missing go on sale Tuesday, September 6. The MCT Center for the Performing Arts is ADA accessible and MCT accommodates accessibility needs upon request. For more information or to buy tickets, call (406) 728-7529 or visit www.mctinc.org.

Adds Artistic Flair to Their Team</title><pubDate>Tue, 30 Aug 2011 15:57:16 GMT</pubDate><description>Missoula, MT — MCT, Inc. (parent company of the Missoula Children’s Theatre and MCT Community Theatre) recently hired Joseph Martinez as their artistic director. Previously, Martinez worked at MCT for thirteen years in various roles, including as show director for sold out performances of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” “Kiss Me, Kate,” and the school edition of “Les Misérables” before leaving to help open the Arizona Broadway Theatre, a successful professional dinner theatre in Peoria, Arizona.
“When the artistic director position opened up, I jumped at the chance to return to MCT. Remembering that feeling of making a difference in someone’s life was one of my main reasons I wanted to return,” Martinez said. Martinez came on board in July and already co-directed a show with thirty-year MCT veteran and executive director, Michael McGill. “After directing and managing at the Arizona Broadway Theatre, Joe brings great experience and highly developed skills to MCT; we’re delighted to have him back,” said McGill. “We have so many projects to go around, and it’s nice to share the fun. Joe and I have had many different jobs at MCT and we speak the same language.”
“Coming back after six years is, as they say, like riding a bike. It feels like I’m in the right place, where I need to be. The passion that people have for this company, as well as the passion the community has for the arts—there is nothing better. To be able to be part of this is very rewarding,” Martinez shared. As MCT heads into their new season, Martinez will direct “Miss Nelson is Missing,” a production for children, in celebration of National Arts In Education Week this September, as well as MCT Community Theatre’s “She Loves Me” in December and “West Side Story” next May.

And It’s Filled With Delightful Classics
MISSOULA, MT — The tradition of holding four musicals and one non-musical play continues at the MCT Community Theatre with these classics: “Dracula,” “She Loves Me,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” “Godspell,” and “West Side Story.”

“This season offers something for everyone, with several shows that will entertain the whole family,” said Michael McGill, MCT Inc.’s executive director, “We’re bringing horror, heart-warming drama, hilarity, hummable tunes, and humanity to the stage throughout the next year.”

Audiences may know the “She Loves Me” storyline as “The Shop Around the Corner,” a movie with Jimmy Stewart, or as “You’ve Got Mail” featuring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. “Once Upon a Mattress” is a fun—but fractured—fairy tale based upon “The Princess and the Pea” story and was the vehicle for Carol Burnett’s stardom in the seventies. “Godspell” brings popular music telling the story of Jesus to the Missoula stage, and the last show of the season, “West Side Story,” is based on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” set in the early sixties, and showcases the conflicts and violence of street life. It features a well-known score by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The inclusion of this title in the season piqued the interest of prospective actors and audience alike, with the result of many new and familiar faces joining the cast.

New to the MCT stage are veteran Missoula actors Andrew Rizzo as Randle Patrick McMurphy and Martha Neslen as Nurse Ratched. Also, Samuel Jaxin Enemy-Hunter, a storyteller for the Crow Tribe of Indians, makes his Missoula debut as Chief Bromden.

“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is set in a mental health institution during the sixties, and focuses on one man’s epic struggle. The audience follows his journey through all of man’s desperate emotions from joy to tragedy.

MISSOULA, MT—Each year the Missoula Children’s Theatre develops one new musical to add to their repertoire of touring shows. This year, MCT’s new prototype show is “Blackbeard the Pirate,” written by executive director, Michael McGill.
Prototype shows are rehearsed in Missoula with a full cast of children twice a week, for a period of five weeks. Once perfected, the MCT International Tour will feature “Blackbeard the Pirate,” among other titles, and will produce each show within one week’s time. According to McGill, “In a prototype environment, we take more time to polish the script, refine blocking, and establish the most effective teaching methods for that particular show. February 1, 2011
On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire MCT, Inc. family, I apologize to our audience, our communities, and to Sarah Palin for language included in a recent MCT Community Theatre production.

At times, our Community Theatre does delve into current events or present what certain audiences may construe as sensitive material. In this particular situation, however, we recognize that we made a mistake. The offending language was inappropriate and insensitive and should not have been included in the finished piece. We have implemented a policy to ensure this doesn’t happen again. I will review all scripts and scores—including re-writes and additions—with closer scrutiny and greater sensitivity.

To clarify, MCT Community Theatre productions are solely performed in the local theater and do not reflect content performed in our children’s productions. Productions produced through the Missoula Children’s Theatre are family-friendly fare, appropriate for all ages.

Again, the Board of Directors and I offer our sincerest apologies.

MISSOULA, MT—This December, director Michael McGill wants you to leave the theatre ready to enjoy the holiday season with new warmth in your heart. MCT Community Theatre presents the inspiring classic, “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” December 3-12 at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts.

“Life is 10 percent what you make it, and 90 percent how you take it,” said Irving Berlin, arguably one of America’s best composers. “White Christmas” shares ideals such as life is precious, people are good to people, and hope is out there if you’ll just go around the corner to meet it. Mix the uplifting script with MCT’s ability to create a relationship with the audience and you’ll take the "White Christmas" message home with you.

The play takes place in several locations including a quaint Vermont inn and contains classic musical numbers such as “Blue Skies,” “Sisters,” and, of course, “White Christmas.” McGill hopes to show something essential to life: the intangible feeling that can be achieved through rediscovered hope in the future.

All performances will be held at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets ($15 to $20) are available by phone at (406) 728-7529, online at www.mctinc.org, or in person at 200 North Adams Street, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on show dates one hour prior to the show.

MISSOULA, MT — MCT Community Theatre's first offering of the 2010-2011 season kicks off with Mel Brooks' “The Producers.” Guest directed by Dan Sharkey, ”The Producers” brings Max Bialystock (played by Howard Kingston) a down on his luck producer with a string of flops to his name together with Leo Bloom (Don Mogstad) a shy accountant with dreams of grandeur, and a plan to get rich quick is born. The idea: get one very wealthy backer, produce Broadway’s biggest flop, close after the first curtain and make off with the dough!

Originally written for the screen and starring Gene Wilder in 1968, “The Producers” was re-written as a musical for Broadway in 2001. A Tony Award winner the original cast was headed by Nathan Lane as Max and Matthew Broderick as Leo. The two later reprised their roles for the movie version that was released in 2005.

Not a show for the whole family, but sure to make you laugh in the irreverent tradition of all things Mel Brooks, grown-ups won’t want to miss this show! You'll laugh until you cry, and be humming tunes for weeks to come.
